Idealized High-Resolution Simulations of a Back-Building Convective System that Causes Torrential Rain

Abstract Record-breaking precipitation due to a back-building convective system occurred in Kyushu Island, Japan, on 5 July 2017. In this paper, quasi-stationary is reproduced using regional weather prediction model initialized with single representative sounding which the land–sea distribution around observed crudely simplified. The simulated and heavy are reasonably similar observations. Horizontal resolution finer than 1 km found be necessary for reproducing system. area of tends shift downstream horizontal resolution. surface temperature contrasts at northern southern coastlines cause sea breezes stationary convergence line between them continuously triggers cumulus clouds. near further enhanced by preceding clouds that latent heating aloft generate mesoscale pressure depression. Vertical shear environmental wind also important organizing but veering its direction cold pool not essential.
